An Open Letter to the Hero of the Wild

This is not how you do it.

Dear Mr. Hero,

I”m no one special. I’m just a blacksmith. People come to me when they want things like wheelbarrows or swords. I’m no expert on anything, but I like to think I know a thing or two about making things with metal.

Everyone who even apprentices as a blacksmith knows the story of the Master Sword. It’s a fabled blade that has been used in many battles throughout our history. Its divine origins represent the height of our craft. Every weapon, every sword, every metallic item that has ever been produced by a blacksmith is at least mentally compared to this sword. There’s an old adage that many blacksmiths like to use when crafting swords, “If it won’t make Link retreat, then put it back in the heat!”

Imagine my surprise when Groblok the Goron, my iron supplier, tells me that he saw you ‘fuse’ a rock to the end of the Master Sword to turn it into a hammer. Mr. Hero, I shouldn’t have to explain to you what is wrong with this. But it seems I do. The Master Sword does not need ‘improvements’ of this type. Adding a rock to the end of a sword is a poor way to increase its effectiveness as a blunt weapon. Moreover, if you continue doing this, one of my colleagues may find themselves in the tricky position of needing to reforge the Master Sword. We don’t have access to superior metallurgy techniques of the ancient Hylians, much less those of the Goddess Hylia! If it breaks because you decided to use it as a hammer, the world will be in a lot of trouble!

There’s too much riding on that blade. The thought of the Master Sword being out there as a force for good helps children and adults sleep easy at night. Please, reconsider your approach to breaking boulders. If you need bombs, come by my shop. I’ll give them to you.

In conclusion, if you are face any other problems with hammers, swords, or ‘degraded weaponry’ in general, I would love to assist you. Just remember this: Hot-gluing rocks onto the end of the blade which makes evil retreat is a poor plan. It’s disrespectful to our nation’s history, and it’s also a really dumb thing to do.

Sincerely,
Richard Ironforge
