The Ethics of Sun Song Spamming
Picture the scene: You’re out late at night and you get attacked by a Stalchild. You don’t have a sword and you’re out of Bombs. But you do have a mystical Ocarina that you got from a princess. In such a situation, what do you do? If you said ‘play the Sun’s Song’, that would be an effective strategy for dealing with the Stalfos. However, this approach may have unintended consequences which extend far beyond your admittedly dangerous encounter.
The Sun’s Song was created by the legendary Composer Brothers in a bygone age. It was a little-known until a certain mischievous adventurer started playing it everywhere. Now, it’s known in most communities and children play it on their musical instruments to see if their instruments have any magical powers.
Magic is an unknown quantity, really. There are many theories, but no one really understands how it works. It seems that the Ocarina belonging to the aforementioned adventurer has more magic than the Ocarinas of the Kokiri Forest children, which in turn have more magic than the Ocarinas of humans. While it is commonly thought that the practice of children playing the Sun’s Song on human ocarinas is harmless, some research indicates that it might produce a mild speeding to the flow of time. The research has been disputed, but I say, let us temporarily halt this practice until the process of peer review is complete!
When the daytime comes too quickly too many times over the course of days and weeks, crops can dry out. This could cause a famine. I do not mean to alarm anyone, but rather to inform and advise caution. There is no threat that we cannot mitigate as of yet, but if the situation is left unchecked, that may change.
Link, if you should read this, I can scarcely imagine the threats that are faced by one who is destined to save this land from Ganon. If you must play the Sun’s Song to aid in your quest, then play it! However, if there is another way to achieve the same end, please do consider that alternative. We must protect the environment even as we protect the world the forces of evil!
